The American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) published this super cool infographic on Friday, February 28th and it is spreading across the web quickly. The graphic depitcs the current state of crisis of the Federal Highway Trust Fund and points out that this is not the first time the infrastructure of our nation has been in danger. In fact, exactly 53 years ago on Feb. 29th, 1961, President John F. Kennedy stood before his congress and said, "Our federal pay-as-you-go highway program is in peril." The infographic produced by the ARTBA supports raising the fuel tax user taxes… at rates sufficient to pay the full cost of the program, without charge on general federal revenues… “The pay-as-you-go principle… requires an increase in the revenues from user taxes…” as stated by President Kennedy. The bottom line of the plea presented by the ARTBA is the gas tax rate of today is worth about two pennies per gallon, in 1961 dollars. You can read more by clicking here.
