The New Year will be ringing in a few new laws on our nations roads. Kasas will be no longer be collecting the ad valorem, or the motor carrier property tax, and will instead be increasing the registration fees that are applied to intrastate and interstate operations. Truckers not residing in the state of Kansas should expect to pay the tax through the International Registration Plan. Kansas will be charging a $400 commercial vehicle fee for tractor-trailers weighing over 60,000 pounds and they must be registered through the IRP. The new law may result in lost revenue for the state, but will be a cost savings for both truckers and the state itself.
